How Are Our Energy Leaders Approaching their Businesses?

While attending the Energy Conference last Friday at the Ritz Carlton, I listened carefully to what leaders of energy corporations had to say about what was happening in their businesses and how their companies were proceeding during this continued sluggish economic times.

SPX and Duke Energy CEOs and Piedmont Natural Gas' rep seemed to be moving gradually forward with their firms, conservatively taking steps to grow their industry. You could definitely hear caution in their voices and yet still taking steps to advance their companies. There wasn't any mention of plans for substantial growth -- like large additions of staff, and yet they don't seem to be refraining from some forward movement, including performing research and development.

However, Arreva and Seimen's representatives appeared to be taking a more aggressive approach. Siemen's, in particular, is taking steps to add numerous positions to prepare for future changes and growth in the energy industry. This was a positive and encouraging sign. However, all agreed these are uncertain times in regards to the economy.

Most attending this conference seemed to walk away with an understanding that though our economy is not where we want it to be, we in business must continue to take steps to grow our businessses and look for ways to encourage positive, "smart" growth.

What are you doing to grow your business?
